ADUs: WHAT’S THE USE’S?

I sometimes get asked, "what is the best ADU for the money?", as if the asker was buying a new car. "I would have to see your property," I say, hoping that my response will lead to more questions, a conversation, and (if I am being honest) an invitation to see their home or property.

The asker's next reply is as unique, and as relative to their needs as the clothes they are wearing. It usually begins with, "We (or I) have a...", and is one of my favorite parts of our encounter: the sharing. Our stories, the sharing, and the sharing of our stories leads to so many riches, perspectives, and/or paths, but, ultimately, it circles back and answers a deeper question: "Why are we talking?"

"Options," I say to my new friend or friends. Some look at me funny when I say that, and some look at me as if something just 'clicked.' I continue, "When you build an ADU, whether it's a pre-fab, site-build, or a hybrid of the two, you want to have as many reasons or options to build it as you have for it's many 'uses.'"
